We weren't sure why the MAYOR OF BIRMINGHAM was at the war memorial. There was no announcement.
She mooched through the crowd and gathered a mixed bunch of children around her.
OK, we had all guessed it was a balloon release. We could see the balloons - obviously. No words were spoken. No explanation offered.
Away went the balloons, released by a chain gang of children and mayor.
The spectators were as baffled as me, until one person told another the reason for the long wait; timing, in this matter was everything. At least I was enlightened.
