Oh such a slow weekend. We were going to get cracking with the new stair case. The stairwell has to be made. The old stairs will come out and the space created used to make another room; a bathroom.
First we check out the badger feed, and we find ... cat food.
They don't like the stuff. It's all soggy and swollen and looks completely unappetising. All the nuts have gone, of course.
Measure twice, cut once. So, the new stair case we're storing in the shed is wider than the space I've allowed for it. Now it'll affect the room plan, if I have to widen the hole in the floor. Not that I've made the hole yet. Not happy. Ok.plan B, we'll recycle the outgoing staircase. Oh, bloody marvellous, it doesn't comply with building regs. No chance of using it. Next, plan C: buy a stair case, ready made. Uh huh, might of known it. The space I've allowed is a none standard width.
Plan D, is now to get one made. We've a choice of about 4 people in town. I'll tout around over next week and see if I can cut a deal. we've a list a mile long of things to do.
Took a breather and went into the garden.
Those snowdrops have really come on.
.
as have the crocuses
and the primroses.
Spent a big chunk of the rest of the day putting away things that will be ruined by the dust fallout once we start work. Wont cut the hole in the ceiling/floor until we have the stairs to put in as it'll cause a tremendous draft.
And the stairs in the shed? They'll be used for the lower flight. It's a 3 storey house (is that right? Ground, first and second floors).
Sunday 28.2.10
First job today, buy an oven. Missed one yesterday. Can't live with out one. One was finishing about 10am and we got it: Won it actually. Ebay. 30 quid. The owner was going out to do some shopping and said we can pick it up later. She'll phone us.
Spent the day working out how best to do internal insulation on the top part of the house. A lot of choices. In the end it comes down to cost, and ease and time taken for installation. We spent the whole day on a computer each, researching all the options.
Decided to batten the walls and infill with rock wool, it's a zero carbon insulator. We'll use recycled wood for the battening. The wall needs lining first with a membrane; more research needed here, otherwise we're set to go. I'll hopefully, be able to buy the rockwool tomorrow. 5 quid a roll, mega cheap deal.
It's 8pm and the oven lady hasn't been in contact. It's kept us hanging around all day. We thought we could drop off the old oven at the tip and the top box and air bed to Paul and Em, pick up the big silage sheet from Gerry and Em and go to see the new baby and Andy and Em while we were out picking it up. These things will have to happen during next week.
Now we're hungry and we have no hob...it's wired into the old oven, or at least it was. The old oven's in the middle of the kitchen floor. What you're looking at is most of our kitchen floor. It's a very small kitchen.
Super safe wiring. Ah, now we have a hob. Safe as houses.
Now we can eat. MeWally is Chef, he's so brave.
Dinner cooking on the hob. Anyone fancy cleaning out the cooker housing?
No? Guess that'll be me then.
